The CDC - the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - reports that Alabama has one of the highest rates of opioid prescriptions written for every segment of the population. In 2015, for instance, doctors in the state wrote close to 6 million prescriptions for this class of medications. It has also been reported that the state has one of the highest rates of opioid prescriptions across the United States.

The Prescription Drug Crisis In Alabama

Irrespective of its rich and turbulent history, Alabama also struggles with changing trends in the rates of substance abuse and addiction, particularly involving prescription drugs such as opioids.

The Alabama Prescription Drug overview published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, for instance, reported that the state lost 11.8 lives for every segment of 100,000 people.

Alabama also saw an increase in the rates of opioid abuse and addiction, as well as in the rates of admissions into a drug rehabilitation center involving the abuse of this class of prescription drugs.

  • Most of the teens in the state now believe that abusing prescription drugs is a much safer alternative than taking illicit street substances like cocaine since prescriptions are issued by doctors

The Scope Of Prescription Drug Use In Alabama

Prescription drug abuse refers to the process of taking medications in any way other than your doctor advised when they wrote a prescription for these drugs. it could also involve using these medications for a condition that is different than that indicated on the medication.

It could also involve using prescription inappropriately and intentionally for any reason other than a physician recommended or intended, or in quantities or a manner other than they directed.

  • You should never share your prescription medications even with people who are suffering from the same or related problems
  • You should never take any prescription drug that was not expressed prescribed for you by your doctor

In terms of opioid abuse and addiction in Alabama, the following some towns and cities within the state ended up reporting the highest rates of opioid abuse from 2006 through to 2012.

40 percent of these towns and cities were within Walker County, which reported the highest rates of opioid substance abuse and addiction during the same time. The data from that period also reported that 140 pills were written for every resident of Walker County every year.

That said, it seems that the rural part of the state, particularly the region close to the northwestern part of Alabama close to Mississippi had the most major problems with prescription drug abuse. This region includes counties such as Colbert, Franklin, Marion, and Winston.

During the last year of study - in 2017 - it was also reported that Alabama has one of the highest rates of prescriptions written for opioid drugs across the United States. This rate was close to 2 times as high as that reported at the national level. This was according to reports from NIDA - the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The state has several programs in place designed to reduce the prescription drug abuse crisis affecting its residents. These programs include:

  • An improvement in access to addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs across the state
  • An increase in the distribution of naloxone, a medication used to reverse overdose situations involving opioid drugs
